The ancient city of Ephesus, first inhabited during the Bronze Age, followed by the Greeks and Roman Empire, was a port city, once considered the most important in the Roman Empire. Ephesus, home to over 250,000 inhabitants was an important trade route along the Mediterranean, and the centre of creativity and culture. Famously home to philosophers, artists, teachers and creatives alike and known as a city where men and women had equal rights. A city built from marble, and one of the most well preserved archaeological sites in Turkey. Visitors come to admire its history, advanced technology and architecture, as well as its connections to early Christianity as one of the Seven Churches of the Revelation. Visitors to the Ephesus may visit the largest amphitheatre in the ancient world, which hosted over 25,000 people, the Goddess Nike, Hadrian’s Gate, Library of Celsus (the third largest library in the Roman world), Marble Road, Roman baths and Harbour Street the Ephesus grand boulevard.

Terraced Houses (Ephesus)

The terraced houses, located in Ephesus Ancient city, are an excellent example of how Ephesus’s elite lived and socialised within the city. Excavations of these dwellings began in the 60s and remain ongoing. A visit to these luxurious villas will also showcase the intricacies of the architecture dating back to 200 BC, including murals and mosaics while showcasing the technology of the time and living conditions during the period.

St. John Basilica

St John the Apostle whom spent his final years in Ephesus and the surrounding region with the Mother Mary, is believed to have his final resting place located in the centre of Selçuk. Becoming one of the most sacred sites and a regular pilgrimage for many in the region, the Emperor Justinian later expanded this site and built an expansive monument including a church to commemorate the Apostle. Today, visitors can tour the ruins of the Basilica and Tomb of St John, known today as an important historical and religious site.
